I've decided that, if Thor is going to continue to eat like he does, then he needs to get a job. I've found him one. blue_thumbsup-1

When the heatwave hit this week, flies started showing up in droves. The big, fat, black-and-green, buzzy kind. And they arrived all at once one day, like we'd invited them to a party. Some got into the house, despite the fact the we've inspected and mended all the window screens. Eww.

Thor's job is catching and disposing of these flies. Unfortunately, the flies tend to stay high up, out of reach of cats. And round and inert as he is, Thor isn't much of a leaper. So, I act as cherrypicker and hoist him up to where the flies are. When he is tete a tete, Thor plucks flies from the air with his paws and bashes them dead. The same way that King Kong dealt with those pesky airplanes from atop the Empire State. It's brilliant! And organic. A total solution.

Of course, Thor eats some of the flies. Which isn't so nice. battle-310-1 But only the tastiest specimens, I expect.

First of all I must say the book "lord of the flies' was one of my favorites! lol! A

And second, I just spewed my drink at the vision of you walking around holding Thor up catching said flies!

Third, let him eat all the flies….they are tasty just like chicken….and filling just like cat food, lol!  Now you wont have to sell you left kidney to feed the  ravenous  boy so much k-grin

No one said cat ownership was pretty. Or fun. Or cheap. Or tidy. Or restful.

We're doomed!

Could Thor teach my four? Three really since Murph is excused from fly duty by age; Maggie and Abby are slacking off and the new guy, Bo (Beauregard Rutherford III cat-088-2) feels he's fallen into the lap of luxury and indulgence after years in neighborhood yards and canyon so all he does is sleep and meow, loudly!

Took me FOREVER to remember how to post the pics of my newest fly-hunter-slacker but here he is:

Wow, poppet. You have a higher tolerance for creep-factor than I do! blue_thumbsup-1 I read that book in middle school–just the one time–and I can still conjure up the imagery. Terrifying. The fact that it was kids turning to savagery made it so much worse. Animal Farm was along the same lines, but it was set in a barnyard. And remembering middle school as vividly as I do, I have no doubt the whole situation would have transpired just the way William Golding described. *flesh creeping*

I will also say, the whole time I was watching the TV series Lost, I kept waiting for "pig's head on a stick" to put in an appearance. I mean, the writers were so deliberate in playing up the presence of wild pigs on the island. Opportunity, uh, lost. k-palm

What's next – waiting for you to put any mice on a leash for his convenience?  At least Thor has some hunting skills, my two just gently pat-pat at their prey (any crawly thing that catches their attention ist seems), they have a no kill policy it seems!

Marciacat – your new boy is quite handsome and really seems to know just how lucky he is!! k-c9

Bo says thank you! He's stretched out here next to me in almost the exact pose as the second picture; so tempting to scritch the tummy, must resist or run the risk of having my hand attacked, lol! He's not quite ready for that yet, but I can tickle toesies. blue_thumbsup-1small-cat-3-1

Hehe, I've always held cats up to catch flies and other pesky flying insects, my lot especially love moths and crane flies.

Janey: tell Thor is he is a hero. I hate having flies in the house. Rani is good with bluebottles, I think I posted before that she lets them buzz between her teeth for a few seconds before giving them the coup de grace and biting down. Sherbet for cats.

Marciacat: Bo is lovely, really nice comfy looking cat, obviously totally at home. No doubt the tummy scratching will come with time.

My lot never caught anything useful.  Except spiders.  Good, one might think, except that I'm scared shitless of them, even dead ones.  Basil thought it great fun to bring one to me once and drop it in my lap.  The blood-curdling scream I let out sent everyone flying in all directions!

Then, of course, there had to be the house-hunt to make sure there weren't any more lurking, as it was close to bedtime and I wasn't going to even close one eye for fear the unfortunate part-chewed-yet-still-alive-and-crawling one had any mates…
